Review ot the Dental Patients With Systemic Disease in General Hospital


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to be familiar with the basic medical knowledge and adequate
dental treatment of the patients with systemic disease by careful history taking and physical
evaluation. From January, 1999 to December, 1999, 3506 patients were analysed using chart
review and questionnare study retrospectively. The obtained results were as follows:
1. There were 427 patients with systemic disease(12.2%). Male to female ratio was 0.79 : 1
2. The age of patients ranged from 1 to 88 years, with a mean 51.2 years
3. The most frequent systmeic problem was hypertension, and the rests were diabetus, heart
disease, live disease, liver disease, and so forth.
4. The most frequent dental disease was periodontits, and the rests were dental caries,
impacted tooth and so forth.
5. The most frequent primary dental treatment without medical consultation was counselling,
and the rests were medication, scaling or simple curettage, extraction, and so forth.
6. There were 114 consultation with internal medicine.
7. The most definitive dental treatment was extraction, and the rests were endodontic treatment,
scaling or periodontal treatment, prosthetic treatment, and so forth
8. There were 4 severe systemic complications. These included death due to toxic hepatitis,
continuous gingival bleeding after periodontal treatment, and postoperative infections.
